The role of the media in contemporary politics forces us to ask what kind of a world and what kind of a society we want to live in, and in particular in what sense of democracy do we want this to be a democratic society?. First of all, it's worth to counter-posing two different conceptions of democracy. One conception of democracy has it that a democratic society is one in which the public has the means to participate in some meaningful wayin the management of their own affairs and the means of information are open and free. If you look up democracy in the dictionary you'll get a definition something like that. An alternative conception of democracy is that the public must be barred from managing of their own affairs and the means of information must be kept narrowly and rigidly controlled. That may sound like an odd conception of democracy, but it's important to understand that it is the prevailing conception. Therefore, this is the way for the Media to completely falsify history. That's a way to overcome these sickly inhibitions, to make it look as if when the U.S. attack and destroy somebody they're really protecting and defending the Americans against major aggressors and monsters and so on. There has been a huge effort since the Vietnam war to reconstruct the history of that. Too many people began to understand what was really going on. Including plenty of soldiers and a lot of young people who were involved with the peace movement and others. That was bad. It was necessaryto rearrange those bad thoughts and to restore some form of sanity, namely, a recognition that whatever we do is noble and right. If we're bombing South Vietnam, that's because we're defending South Vietnam against somebody,namely, the South Vietnamese, since nobody else was there. It's what the Kennedy intellectuals called defense against "internal aggression" in South Vietnam. That was the phrase used by Adlai Stevenson and others. It was necessary to make that the official and well understood picture. That's worked pretty well. When you have total control over the media and the educational system and scholarship is conformist, you can get that across. One indication of it was revealed in a study done at the University of Massachusetts on attitudes toward the current Gulf crisis—a study of beliefs and attitudes in television watching. One of the questions asked in that study was, How many Vietnamese casualties would you estimate that there were during the Vietnam war? The average response on the part of Americans today is about 100,000. The official figure is about two million. The actual figure is probably three to four million. The people who conducted the study raised an appropriate question: What would we think about German political culture if, when you asked people today how many Jews died in the Holocaust, they estimated about 300,000? What would that tell us about German political culture? They leave the question unanswered, but you can pursue it. What does it tell us about our culture? It tells us quite a bit. It is necessary to overcome the sickly inhibitions against the use of military force and other democratic deviations. In this particular case it worked. This is true on every topic. Pick the topic you like: the Middle East, international terrorism, Central America, whatever it is—the picture of the world that's presented to the public has only the remotest relation to reality. The truth of the matter is buried under edifice after edifice of lies upon lies. It's all been a marvelous success from the point of view in deterring the threat of democracy, achieved under conditions of freedom, which is extremely interesting. It's not like a totalitarian state, where it's done by force. These achievements are under conditions of freedom. If we want to understand our own society, we'll have to think about these facts. They are importantfacts, important for those who care about what kind of society they live in.

El control de la Media (medios de comunicación): La representación de unapseudo realidad para los Norteamericanos y el mundo
El rol que cumplen hoy los medios de comunicación en la actual política nos lleva a questionarnos acerca de qué clase de mundo o en qué clase de sociedad queremos vivir, y en particular, en qué sentido de la democracia queremos nosotros que sea esta una sociedad democrática. Ante todo, deberíamos contra poner dos conceptos diferentes de democracia. El primer concepto de democracia apunta a que en una sociedad democrática laspersonas poseen el medio para participar significativamente en la administración de sus propios asuntos, y que también los medios informativos son abiertos y libres. Si buscas en el diccionario la definición de democracia, encontrarás algo muy parecido a lo mencionado anteriormente.Una concepción alternativa de democracia tiene que ver con la idea de que el público debe ser apartado del manejo de sus propios asuntosy los medios informativos deben ser rígida y atentamente controlados. Esto puede parecer extraño como definición de democracia, pero es necesario quese entienda que aquella última es la concepción de democracia que prevaleceen los Estados Unidos.Lo anterior demuestra la forma que tienen los medios de comunicación de falsificar completamente la historia. Aquella es la forma de superar la inhibición enfermiza, de hacer que cuando los Estados unidos atacan y destruyen a algún país o territorio, se vea realmente como si ellos estuvieran protegiendo y defendiendo a su gente de mayores agresores y monstruos enemigos. Desde el inicio de la guerra de Vietnam, se ha hecho un gran esfuerzo por reconstruir la historia aquella. Mucha gente desdeentonces comenzó a entender que estaba realmente sucediendo, y esto incluye a muchos soldados y gente joven los cuales pertenecían a movimientos de pazy otros tipos de movimientos de oposición a la guerra. Aquello aparecía como algo amenazador para la élite, por lo cual era necesario reiniciar los malospensamientos y restablecer algunas formas de sanidad, nombramientos, en fin, un reconocimiento que de cualquier forma diera a entender que lo que los Americanos hacen es noble y es correcto. Si ellos bombardean el sur de Vietnam, lo hacen porque estan defendiendo a Vietnam del Sur de alguien más, los llamados sur vietnamitas, ya que nadie más realmente estaba allí. Es lo que los intelectuales de Kennedy llamaron la defensa en contra de la "agresión interna" en el sur de Vietnam. Esa fue la frase usada por AdlaiStevenson y otros más. Fue necesario entonces tener una imágen oficial yentendible para todos los ciudadanos. Aquella imágen funcionó muy bien. Cuando tienes el control total de los medios de comunicación y el sistemaeducacional, y más encima los académicos son conformistas, tu lo puedes entender todo. Una indicación como aquella fue revelada en un estudio llevado acabo por la Universidad de Massachusetts sobre las actitudes hacia la actualguerra del Golfo. Un estudio acerca de las creencias y actitudes sobre lo que se observa en televisión. Uno de las preguntas formuladas era: ¿cuántas víctimas Vietnamitas podrías estimar tu que hubieron durante la guerra de Vietnam?.Un promedio de las respuestas por parte de los Norteamericanos hoy en día es de cerca de 100.000. La versión oficial señala que fueron cerca de dos millones de personas. La versión actual señala que probablemente fueron entre tres y cuatro millones de personas. La gente que llevaba a cabo aquel estudio formuló una pregunta muy apropiada: ¿Qué podríamos pensar de lacultura política de Alemania si, cuando le preguntaron a la gente hoy en díacuantso Judíos murieron en el Holocausto, y ellos estimaron un promedio de300.000?. ¿Qué nos podría decir aquello de la cultura política de Alemania?. Los encuestadps dejaron la pregunta sin contestar. ¿Qué nos dice de su cultura?, esto nos dice mucho. Es necesario entonces superar la inhibición enfermiza en contra del uso de la fuerza militar y otras desviaciones democráticas. En este caso en particular, esto funcionó. Y esto funciona en cualquier tipo de tópico. Puedes elegir el tópico que quieras: Medio Oriente, terrorismo internacional, América Central, en el tópico que fuese, la imágen del mundo que se presenta a las personas tiene la más mínima relación con la realidad. La verdad de los hechos es enterrada en barrotes tras barrotes de mentiras sobre mentiras. Esta ha sido todo un éxito del punto de vista de la disuación de la amenaza de la democracia, logrado bajo condiciones de libertad, las cuales son demasiado interesantes para la opinión pública. Esto no es como un Estado totalitario, en donde todo es hecho por la fuerza. Aquellos logros se realizan bajo condiciones de libertad. Si queremos entender a nuestra propia sociedad, debemos pensar en aquellos hechos. Aquellos son importantes hechos, al menos lo son para aquel a quien le importa la clase de sociedad en la que vive.
